Thirteen things I won’t miss about this old house
As I’ve said before, we’re getting ready to move next week. The move is to a much nicer home with more features and a fenced yard, whih will make both charlie and Mr. Seat of his Diaper pretty happy, I’m sure! Part of me will miss the house we live in now. It’s the first real home we ever shared, and that is something you can never get back.
On the other hand, this house is OLD. It was build somewhere around 1946, and let’s just say that the maintenance programs here on base have not been kind tho this old girl. She’s not what she once was, and the decision has been made that she never will be. Her time has come.
Over the past several days it has occurred to me that there are things I absolutely will not miss about living here. I thought I’d share those with you.
Thirteen Things I will Not Miss About This Old House Of Ours
- Changing the light bulbs in the overhead lights twice a month due to brownouts.
- The oven door that has never closed properly, even after 5 calls to housing on the subject.
- The drafts. It’s impossible to keep a house cool in a humid environment if water vapor from outside does not stay outside!
- No grounded outlets. I’ve got thousands of dollars worth of at-risk electronics in this house.
- Cleaning up after my neighbor’s animals. The new place has a fence, so the only dog I have to clean up after is my own!
- The kitchen that is smaller than the walk-in closet in our old apartment will not be missed either. Granted, the new kitchen can’t be called expansive, but at least there’s room for two people to be in it at the same time.
- 1940’s storage options. There may be a ton of closets in this place, but absolutely none of them make any sense for storing things!
- Uneven floors! Do I really need to say why?
- The bathroom! We not only get two in the new house, but they’re actually large enough to turn around in!
- The lack of natural light. In our current home there is no good place to take food shots. Most of the time these shots require two small studio lamps and a desk lamp with reflectors to make everything come out well. the new house has a sliding glass door in the dining area that is filled with sunlight in the afternoon, which just happens to be the time I usually shoot food!
- The “dining Room”. In the current house it is separated from the kitchen, which means I can’t watch my son at the table and clean the kitchen at the same time. The new place has a breakfast bar. Easier to clean, and Mr. seat of his diaper will be right there with me while I’m getting things straightened up. It will be a nice change!
- Low windows. have you ever had a toddler around mini-blinds? how about a curious puppy? Yeah, I’ll be glad to go over to high windows.
- Last, but absolutely not the least of the things I’ll be glad to leave behind. The asbestos cloth insulation on all the wiring in the house. I already smoke, I don’t need asbestos added to my list of health risks, and I damned sure don’t want my son or my wife around it!
The list really could go on, but I think that’s enough. I’m glad to be moving. I’ll post the floor plan for the new diggs later. They’ve already pulled the plan for mine so unfortunately I can’t show it for comparison.
Happy TT!

We’ve come to expect so many things in our homes. At one time this was probably someone’s dream home. Enjoy your new spacious home with the fenced in yard. Life is good
Congrats on your new home! I wish you and your family all the best in it!
Oh yeah, I am also moving out from an old 1940s house. I have planned to do it by the end of May. And I know what you mean when talking about 40s storage options. The house I live in has no closets, and the ceiling of the main bathroom is threatening to fall down one of this days…
Luckily, I already made the first payment for my own flat. It will be ready on May 28th.
Happy Moving!!
Good luck with the move!
Maybe next week will be 13 things you’ll miss!
Smiles,
Caroline

oooh, the reminders of military housing!
We are PCSing this summer. I am looking at homes in a few towns nearby, just on the side chance there is no way in he!! I will live in them.
Aren’t you Air Force? The only AF housing I have ever seen was in Fairbanks, AK. It was really nice!
Judi,
It was my dream home at one point as well. Even though I knew we would only be here a while.
Kat,
We’ll be happy there as long as they let us stay. It’s the military game, so it’s not our choice. If it were, I might just stay forever.
afterthem,
The house is sound, it’s just slated for demolition. It’s kind of sad, really. There’s a lot of history in these walls.
Caroline,
It’s very possible. Or it would have been when this was still a neighborhood. At this point the lot across the street is a barren and desolate place that simply blows dirt and dust into my yard.
tommiea,
I kind of like military housing. It lets us save for the day we are free to buy our own.
Yep, We’re Air Force. (Or she is, I’m former Navy and not willing to let that go!) The housing we’re moving into is quite nice. The houses that they are building are palatial @ 1,700 square feet for a two bedroom. We’re just happy to be away from the construction.
Glad I found you through Jen on FFF! I love the Thursday 13 idea and I will plan to participate. We moved from a world War I era duplex(it was the first federal housing project) to a house of the same era but we added about 1000 square feet of new space including a new kitchen, family room, upstairs laundry room, and master suite,so weget the best of both worlds- the good bones of an old house and the conveniences of the new! Good luck in the new place!
