Welcome to my 24th Thursday Thirteen. The TT I did on kitchen tips was such a rousing success that I figured I would keep going with the things you guys wanted to see.
This time around I chose to find some of the strangest used for common food items around the house. I think I did a fairly decent job. I know I hadn’t heard of a lot of these methods myself. Thirteen Strange Uses for Food Around the Home
- Have a scratch on a piece of dark wood furniture? Just rub the meat of a walnut on the scratch, it will darken and blend in with the rest of the furniture in a few hours.
- Ants in the kitchen? Hit them with a blast of cooking spray. It kills them instantly without the need to use harsh or toxic chemicals around your food.
- Toothache? Place a few drops of Tabasco Sauce on a cotton swab and rub it on your tooth. it will numb the tooth better than OraGel.
- Use Mayonnaise to remove water stains from your wood furniture. Just put a bit of mayo on the water stains and wipe with a cloth.
- To get rid of aphids on house plants, place some cola in a spray bottle and mist the leaves and buds on the plant well. Let sit for a few days then take outside and rinse. The little beasties will no longer be an issue.
- Hate the smell of onions on your hands after you cut them? Wet your hands, pour some salt in the palms of your hands and scrub. Rinse well and the smell will be gone!
- In the same bent as above, if you want to get the smell of garlic off your hands, just rub your dry hands against any piece of clean-dry stainless steel. like the side of a sink, or even a butter knife. The smell will vanish.
- Baking soda and vinegar can help clean your drains. Just sprinkle baking soda into a slow drain, then pour vinegar in behind it. The reaction will strip the sides clean.
- Use peanut butter to polish stainless steel. Rub on a thin layer, allow to dry completely and then buff with a soft-dry cloth.
- Place a banana peel beside each rose bush in your garden and you will never have aphids on your roses again. They prefer the banana peel.
- Put 12 oz. of cola or soda water in your coffee pot’s carafe and let it soak for a while. Add ice cubes and swirl them around well then empty. Most of the stains left by strong coffee will have lifted away.
- Got a minor cut? Clean thoroughly and place a dab of honey on the wound. cover with a bandage and leave it for a few days. Not only will it help the cut heal faster, it will keep the bandage from sticking to the wound. (Note: Honey is full of live cultures and never spoils. Don’t try this with anything else!)
- Need to get rid of that nasty price tag sticker glue from your new glass, mug or bowl? Rub the spot with cooking oil, it will come right off!
I hope you found this list informative, or at least entertaining. We’ll be back next week with even more kitchen tips, tricks and nuttiness when possible. If you have something you’d like to see presented as a “thirteen”, let us know and I’ll do my best to get it out here for you!
Keep those ideas coming folks! I can’t do this without you!

Very impressive!

The Pink Flamingo
I often wonder who discovers this stuff and how. Glad for the scoop, though. I could open my fridge later and clean up my living room.
Yes, those are very helpful, actually. Once I used tabasco sauce to paint on my child’s finger and thumb. It helped remind him not to put his fingers in his mouth. Yes, yes, I know. Cruel mom.
#13 will be especially useful.
Awesome Post! Great List that I will be saving for future reference! This is too cool! Happy TT!
I actually saw a bar (shaped the same way as soap) that was stainless steel to take smells off your hands. I thought it weird at the time, but now I know better. I’ll have to keep these ideas in mind the next time I clean.
I have heard that coca-cola can be used for many unusual things. I have used it myself to dissolve the corrosion on a car battery. Maybe that would be a good TT – uses for coca-cola! Great list!
Got a stubborn beagle who also may not be very bright?
Fill a spray bottle with mouth wash and mist past his face to get his attention.
Also gets rid of that distinctive beagle odor -
he’s now minty fresh!
Great tips -
Thanks!
What a great list. I’m going to print this one and keep it in my kitchen! Thanks.
This is wonderful and so helpful. I just found out that vinegar kills grass! :) My favorite thing in the whole world.
Woot! I knew a few! Cool TT!
Wow…I hadn’t heard of a lot of these…thanks for sharing!
:)
Nice list! I think #3 would work except for the fact that my tongue and mouth and therefore body would be on FIRE! LOL …Happy TT!
Wow, definitely learned a few new things from your list. Great T13 topic.
Happy TT
Great tips as always Jerry, thanks!
I never knew about #1 – will have to try it – thanks!
I have used the stainless steel trick many times, it is one of my favorites. Just recently, I picked up a mildew smelling dish cloth and had that smell lingering on my hands. Grabbed a stainless steel spoon and rubbed my hands under water-presto! Yucky smell removed…(I still washed my hands afterward)
