Everyone knows this logo. It’s pretty much synonymous with cleaning products and I’ll be honest, I’ve owned quite a few Dirt Devils over the years. As a matter of fact, all I had in the way of a vacuum in my first house was a little Dirt Devil hand held vac (remember them, with the rotating brush and the obnoxiously loud motor?). I used that little machine to vacuum an 800 square food bungalow for the first three months I lived there. It was a time consuming process to say the least, especially since it required several plug changes and even more frequent bag cleanings, all while on hands and knees.

The world has changed a lot since then.  At that time they were still selling big block V8’s and we were all worshiping the marvels that were yet to be called SUV’s. (We just called them trucks back then.) Today we’re all worried about Energy Star ratings and a knock on the door from Eco Nazis hosting some strange television show if we use too many paper towels. Strangely enough, the powered cleaning industry seems to be the one part of the corporate world that has been immune to the cry of environmentalism that has swept the western world of late, or they were until now.

Enter the Dirt Devil AccuCharge.  The first rechargeable vacuum to receive an Energy star rating.  Now even certified members of the Green Gestapo can happily vacuum their floors, all the while secure in the knowledge that they are wasting far less energy than they would have if they used any other product.  The rest of us can happily do the same, but without the worry of that knock on the door.

Well, unless you use too many paper towels…

OK honestly, the above was meant to be a bit on the humorous side. Energy usage is most definitely something we should be concerned about and when something you have to do meets something that’s good to do, why not go with it.  Greener is better, but like anything else, moderation is the key.

I just found this deal on Amazon and I had to share it with you. Right now you can get the Anolon Professional 12-Piece Nonstick Cookware Set fo a staggering $139.00.

This set normally sells for $803.00, so if you’ve even been toying with the idea of moving to new cookware, now is the time. To be completely honest, if I didn’t have a perfectly good set of almost new EmerilWare. (Also known as All-Clad), I’d be all over this. (It’s still pretty tempting!)

Gates Wine and Tulips

Some of you probably remember me waxing poetic on the subject of Twin Springs Wineries’ Texas Sweet Red wine. Being a wine country expat, I very much enjoy tasting wines that are local to the area I find myself living. Wines from different regions have very different flavor components and characteristics, not to mention methods of vintification. The serious wine types call this terroir (/tεʀwaʀ/ in French), which I suppose is as good a term as any, though I’m not wine-snobby enough to use the term often myself.

My wife had the pleasure of visiting the Wichita Falls Vineyards and Winery this past Saturday for a wine tasting with some friends. She was kind enough not only to take notes on her tasting, but to bring home some of the fruits of the vines and labors of the vintners themselves, definitely something I was interested in sampling!

The Wichita Falls Vineyards and Winery sells wines under two labels. Wichita Falls Winery and Vineyards is their primary label and vintages labeled Gates Vineyards are usually a combination of Texas and California grapes, a very interesting combination, as Texas grapes tend to be much sweeter than California’s offerings. (Texas has less water. Less water=smaller grapes. Smaller grapes=higher sugar content.)
